Turkmen leader labeled ' vindictive U.S. cable

ASTANA Kazakhstan - Turkmenistan authoritarian President was leaked U.S. diplomatic dispatches described as vain, vengeful liar and authorities allegedly fear his being killed so much that a stray cat was a suspect.

Memos from U.S. Embassy staff in Turkmenistan on Thursday on the WikiLeaks site published represent the reclusive former Soviet Central Asian nation as a beehive of corruption under the authority of a dimwitted autocrat.

In a cable dated in December last year, President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov is called by US officials "in vain, suspicious, guarded, strict, very conservative, a practiced liars," a good actor and vindictive. The cable says that review of the President was made by a person, but your identity apparently censored by WikiLeaks has.

"Citing a source with close access to the President is the memo further he by his intellectual superiors is careful."Since our source offered is not a very bright guy, he is suspicious a lot of people, "said the note."

A separate cable dated January describes two incidents which were perceived presidential motorcade, to kill as possible assassination attempts, pointing out that there have been persistent rumors of a failed attempt, Mr Berdymukhamedov in August 2009.

In one a motorist allegedly cut off the presidential motorcade. The hapless driver "was beaten black and blue," to 25 years imprisonment sentenced for attempted assassination and acting head of traffic police and two deputies of capital were immediately released, the memo said.

In the other a cat shot out to the president's car near his home and the security officer responsible for the monitoring of this area was immediately fired, the cable said, citing military sources.

Another cable says the Russian natural gas company, the Itera tries to speed up deals by buying a yacht the Turkmenistan Government allegedly $ 60 million.

Turkmenistan heads of State and Government strict control have not exercised on the former Soviet Republic. Mr. of Berdymukhamedov's predecessor, Saparmurat Niyazov, was a wildly eccentric and mercurial leader, the countless gold statues of itself, including a shot so that it faces the sun always built on a tower. Mr Nijasow, who died in late 2006, a month of the year after his own mother, banned circuses and Opera for renames not sufficiently Turkmen and wrote an extensive spiritual Tome that was required reading for all his countrymen.

Mr Berdymukhamedov first adopted a far more subdued image in public, but gradually more assured. The probably not revelations in the formerly secret diplomatic cable's opinion of the United States doesn't do much for Mr Berdymukhamedov, the memo saying that already dislikes.
