It comes a day after Vince Cable was stripped of his responsibility for making ministerial decisions on media mergers after make remarks about Rupert Murdoch and claimed he could bring down the Coalition.

He told a press conference: “Today's revelations paint a damming picture of the character and direction of this government. Labour has been saying for some months, this government is not in the centre-ground of British politics.

"It is one well out on the Right. The key economic and welfare decisions are Tory decisions.

"On child benefit, housing benefit, tuition fees, and the pace of deficit reduction. These are decisions of a Conservative-led government propped up by Liberal Democrat passengers.

"Passengers not in the front seat. Passengers who have got themselves locked in the boot.”

Mr Miliband also questioned the integrity of the Cabinet minister given the job of adjudicating on media mergers in the wake of Mr Cable’s demotion. Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, will now decide whether Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation can take over BSkyB.

He has instructed John Denham, the shadow business secretary, to write to Sir Gus O’Donnell seeking “reassurance” from the Cabinet Secretary, in light of previous comments made by Mr Hunt about BSkyB and Mr Murdoch, about whether Mr Hunt was “fit and proper” to take on his new responsibility.

Today, 70 civil servants have begun transferring from Mr Cable Business Department to Mr Hunt’s.
