Marcus Davis dominated two rounds and two minutes of his UFC 125 bout against Jeremy Stephens, but Stephens landed the one big punch that finished Davis in the third. Davis came out circling and jabbing for the first minute. Then a seemingly frustrated Jeremy Stephens shot in and forced a clinch. From there Davis tripped him and took him down.
Stephens landed a hard leg kick to open the second as Davis continued to use better footwork to control the distance. Stephens landed a counter punch then another leg kick. They traded inside. Then Davis landed a combination that Stephens answered with a switch kick. More clinching. Davis sought his range then fired a spinning back fist. More jabs from Davis and Stephens shot in. Davis defended the take down but Stephens fought hard for a high single that failed. Davis then went for a trip that gave Stephens a kimura opportunity. Davis smoothly moved to side control and Stephens hung on to the hopeless shoulder lock.
Both come out cautiously in a southpaw stance. They paw right jabs. McKee misses a right hook but follows that with a kick to the ribs. McKee lands a left/right and then shoots in. He’s stuffed. They stand and clinch. McKee presses Volkmann into the cage. After about 20 seconds they separate. Volkmann shoots in and scores a takedown; he lands in half guard. McKee scrambles and gets back to his feet and presses “Christmas” into the cage again. Volkmann reverses and then separates. McKee misses a wild left uppercut/right hook. Very little action at end of frame. Very close round. 10-9 Volkmann.
He most recently took a frustrating decision loss to Melvin Guillard at UFC 119. Prior to that he edged out Sam Stout and finished Justin Buchholz. This won’t mean good things for the aging Davis’ career. Stephens gets another chance to get into contention in the UFC lightweight division.
Leben was a star of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, pioneering the troubled bad boy niche that has become a staple of the reality series. He began his UFC career with five straight wins but after a crushing first round loss to future champ Anderson Silva struggled for the next three years. He went 3-4 after the Silva loss before picking up his three straight wins in 2010.
Stann is the former WEC light heavyweight champion. He struggled after moving to the UFC’s 205lb class, going 2-2 with losses to Krzysztof Soszynski and Phil Davis. He submitted Mike Massenzio in his middleweight debut in August.
We might have the fight of the year on January 1st. Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard put on an all-time classic at UFC 125. It looked like it would be a short night for Edgar after Maynard landed power shot after power shot in round one and nearly finished the champion multiple times. Edgar found a way to prevent referee Yves Lavigne from making his presence known, however, and survived the beating he took in round one. Edgar recomposed himself during the break and capitalized on Maynard, who might have punched himself out in round one. It was a back-and-forth affair from there, with Maynard and Edgar splitting rounds three and four, respectively. I scored the fight 38-37 going into the final round, which I ended up scoring 10-9 for Edgar despite a strong urge to give it the ol’ 10-10.
